BOUNTY HUNTER
This was one of the first games that I completely finished, sometime in 2007. I remember being chuffed about that even though the end result wasn't as desirable as I had hoped for. Think it took about a month from start to finish.
Although it looks a little scrappy at first sight, the game isn't half-bad once you get into it, it's basically GTA in space. You go around completing twelve missions, the final one culminating in destroying some large motherships. On the later levels you can really see the crunch, either it's AS2 or just bad programming, who knows but whatever I tried I couldn't get a smooth fps rate.
If I had to remake it I definitely would do away with the dodgy angle perspectives when you turn. I thought that looked good at the time- what the hell was I thinking eh? The game has been said to be confusing for some people, they didn't know how you got to other sectors, and that you could hold down the SPACE bar to thrust and make your ship go much faster. That being said there are some elements of the game I like, such as the hyperspace warp bit at around Mission 9 (if memory serves), the way the drone ships look, and the RPG aspect of the game, earning credits to build up your ship. The music serves its purpose to build up an atmosphere well enough. Some old timers out there might recognise Martin Galways piece from the C64 game Parallax used when you return to the mothership. The melody stuck in my head since I was a kid. As long as no-one tries to sue me I guess I'll probably use a lot of the old stuff for my games..
If asked I'd probably rate the game at around 5 out of 10, can't blame people for not getting into it when it doesn't really draw them in immediately. If BountyHunter2 does well I may come back to the old drawing board with this one and redoe it up in AS3 with all my mentioned ideas for improvement.
